Lisa K. Nolan

Dr. Lisa K. Nolan became the Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean of Veterinary Medicine and the college’s 15th dean on January 15, 2011. She has been a professor, administrator and researcher at Iowa State University since 2003, having served most recently as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies since 2009. During this period, the research program has grown substantially in expenditures and grants.

From 2007 to 2009, Dr. Nolan was Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, and professor and chair of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine from 2003 to 2008. She also served as interim chair of the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine.

Dr. Nolan has gained international recognition as a researcher for her rigorous work in the area of E. coli and holds three U.S. patents. In the past three years, she has given more than a dozen invited international presentations and published numerous journal articles and book chapters. She has mentored seven post doctoral students, 18 graduate students, several visiting scientists and many undergraduate researchers.

Prior to coming to Iowa State, Dr. Nolan earned her D.V.M, and a Master of Science degree and Ph. D., both in medical microbiology, from the University of Georgia. Since 2003, she has been an Adjunct Professor, Department of Veterinary and Microbiological Sciences, at North Dakota State University, where she was the founding director of the Great Plains Institute of Food Safety from 1999 to 2003.

Dr. Nolan is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Avian Pathologists, American Society for Microbiology, Research Workers in Animal Diseases, and the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association.
