of courses to further their knowledge and interest in entrepreneurship and innovation.
Graduate students are also eligible for the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship internship,
scholarship, and business plan competition programs.
Apparel, Educational Studies, and Hospitality Management 574 - Entrepreneurship Research in Human Sciences
Innovation, creativity, opportunity assessment, business planning. Entrepreneurship in Human Sciences-related businesses; retail, service, hospitality, family, home-based, rural, women- and minority-owned businesses. Market research, feasibility analysis, and new business proposals.
Architecture 582 – Architecture Professional Practice
Emphasis on the circumstances and opportunities of the professional practice of architecture: practice as profession, process, organization, business, and evolving models of practice.
Curriculum & Instruction 603- Advanced Instructional Systems Design.
Exploration of advanced aspects of the instructional design process. Application of analysis, design, development and production, evaluation, implementation, and project management principles. Focus on the production and use of instructional technology with an emphasis on the instructional design consulting process. Theory and research in instructional technology provides the foundation for design decisions.
English 550 - The Craft of Creative Writing
A multigenre craft course required of all incoming Creative Writing students. Readings and writings on the craft of writing poetry, fiction, and nonfiction; some attention to the craft of environmental and nature writing. Course includes modules on a) querying and finding and agent, b) executing a contract, c) publicity, and d) niches.
Human Computer Interaction 592X - Entrepreneurship Workshop
Methods and tools for prospective entrepreneurs to transfer their technology. How to recognize opportunities for entrepreneurial activities. Steps to commercialize a technology or start a company. Topics include identifying technology transfer opportunities, defining commercial markets, developing a business plan, pursing capital, understanding patents, copyrights, and intellectual property, and understanding the basics of running a business.
Management 565 - Feasibility Analysis and Technology Transfer
Essentials of feasibility analysis of the market potential for new technology and
technology-based companies. Topics include the process of technology transfer, intellectual
property, market analysis, competitive strategy and financial strategy development.
Management 566 - Entrepreneurship and New Business Creation
The essentials of starting and operating a new business. Topics include current research
on entrepreneurial perspective, starting and developing a new business, financing the venture,
managing the growing firm, and special issues.
Management 567 - International Entrepreneurship
(3-0) Cr. 3. Essentials of operating an entrepreneurial firm in an intenational environment. Topics include international entrepreneurship, starting and developing a business in an international market, financing international ventures, international management issues, exchange rates, and culture.
Management 568X – Technology Entrepreneurship
A seminar on such topics as: Transformation of technologists into managers; human resources in technology organizations; career paths; technology-based structures; behavior of technology professionals; leadership in technology; managing technology projects; technology transfer from other fields; technology alliances; technology and entrepreneurship.
Management 583 - Strategic Management of Innovation
(3-0) Cr. 3. Prereq: 501 or permission of instructor. Critical analysis and discussion of cases focused on strategic management of innovation. Assessment of a firm's innovative capabilities and competitive dynamics to manage innovative processes. Practical applications through emphasis on implementation including internal corporate venturing, management of the corporate R&D function, and institutionalization of innovation.
Political Science 577 - Government, Business, and Society
Diverse perspectives on the changing roles and relationships of business, government and society so as to open the way for more effective policy decisions on corporate-government affairs. Topics may include the changing economy; transformation of workplace and community conditions; consumerism; social responsibilities of businesses; economic policies and regulations; and politics in the business-government relationship.
Political Science 586 - Science, Technology and Public Policy
Investigates the dynamics of interaction between science and politics at the national and international level and how this interaction shapes policy for science, human welfare, and global concerns. The topics include the evolutionary relationship between science and government; the old and new social contract for science; national innovation policy; and global economic and environmental concerns.
WLC 584 - Technology, Globalization and Culture
Cross-disciplinary examination of the present and future impact of globalization with a focus on preparing students for leadership roles in diverse professional, social, and cultural contexts. Facilitate an understanding of the threats and opportunities inherent in the globalization process as they are perceived by practicing professionals and articulated in debates on globalization. Use of a digital forum for presenting and analyzing globalization issues by on-campus and off-campus specialists.
